A Letter From Rose

Who Says Comfortable Can't Feel Special?

Soft crushed velvet in deep forest green with delicate fern prints, a cozy cowl neck and a graceful waterfall hem. The Chloe drapes over everything you'd rather not show, and still gets you noticed.

Me at my work table in our boutique here in Florida.

Imagine Thanksgiving at your daughter's house. The table is set, the candles are lit, and as you take off your coat your daughter stops and says: "Mom, where did you find that? It's beautiful on you." You feel comfortable, covered and, for once, a little bit special.

Somewhere after sixty, most of the women I know started choosing tops by what they hide. Loose enough for the tummy, long enough for the hips, high enough at the neck. And what's left in the shops is either a shapeless tent or something so plain you disappear in it.

I don't think covering up should mean giving up on beautiful.

Two sisters, one little boutique

Olivia and I grew up near Lake Como, where our grandmother taught us to look at clothes the way you look at something you plan to keep for years: the fabric, the seams, the way it moves when you walk. We both became fashion designers in Italy, and nearly 45 years ago we followed our hearts to Florida and opened our boutique.

Since then, so many women have come through our door telling us the same thing: "Nothing is made for me anymore." Too young, too revealing, or so plain you feel invisible. Finding the pieces that are made for the women we actually know, women in their sixties and seventies with full lives, became our life's work.

Every piece has to pass two tests

Back at the work table. Some habits from Lake Como never leave you.
Back at the work table. Some habits from Lake Como never leave you.

I want to be honest with you: I didn't design the Chloe. These days Olivia and I hand-pick the pieces for our boutique, and every one of them has to pass two tests.

Olivia's test is the fit, the fabric and the finish. Is it comfortable, is it made properly, will it still look good after a season of wear? My test is the woman wearing it. Does it flatter her, does it make her feel like herself, and where will she wear it? Most pieces fail one of the two and go straight back.

I'll admit I almost passed on this one. Patterned velvet can so easily look old-fashioned, and an oversized cut can swallow you whole. Then I put it on, and the hem fell into those long, soft points at my sides. Here's why it passed both tests.

1

Flattering without making me look bigger

Unboxing the Chloe velvet tunic at the kitchen table

The Chloe has a relaxed, oversized fit, but it isn't a tent. The waterfall hem is shorter at the front and falls into longer, pointed sides, so the eye follows those long lines down instead of across. It floats over the tummy and hips and gives you a graceful, flowing shape.

★★★★★

"I'm 64 and usually avoid oversized tops because they make me look wider. This one falls beautifully over my tummy and hips without looking like a tent. The longer sides give it such a graceful shape. I feel comfortable and elegant at the same time."

Bridget A., Asheville, NC

Soft velvet without feeling heavy

The Chloe is made of soft crushed velvet. It feels lovely against your skin and moves with you, so you can wear it from a cool morning walk straight through a long afternoon with the family.

★★★★★

"I love the look of velvet but worried it might feel heavy or stiff. This feels wonderfully soft and comfortable, even when I wear it all afternoon. It's cozy enough for a cool morning but doesn't leave me feeling overheated indoors."

Such a comfortable and elegant neckline

The cowl neck and side buttons of the Chloe velvet tunic in its Olivia & Rose box

The cowl neck folds over softly, so it covers your neck without the tight, closed-in feeling of a turtleneck. The buttons run off to one side, from the collar down to the hem, and that one little detail is what makes people look twice. And they are easy to manage, too.

★★★★★

"At 67, I prefer something that covers my neck without feeling tight like a turtleneck. The soft collar sits beautifully, and the buttons are easy to manage. I love the unusual design because it feels special without being difficult to wear."

Mildred V., Summerville, SC

Even prettier than the pictures

The Chloe velvet tunic hanging by a table set for an autumn dinner

This is the part that won me over. The deep forest green has a soft sheen in the light, and the fern and leaf print in muted gold and olive looks almost hand-painted. It looks rich and quietly elegant, never old-fashioned.

★★★★★

"I was hesitant to order because patterned velvet can sometimes look old-fashioned. But the deep green color and delicate leaf design look absolutely beautiful. My daughter asked where I'd bought it! It has such a rich, boutique-style appearance."

Fiona R., Saratoga Springs, NY

Easy to dress up or down

The Chloe velvet tunic with black pants, ankle boots and silver jewelry

This is my part. With slim black pants and ankle boots for dinner out or Thanksgiving with the family. With leggings for a relaxed afternoon at home or an autumn walk. One piece, and even your simplest outfit looks like you made an effort.

★★★★★

"I've worn this with slim black pants for dinner and with leggings for a relaxed afternoon with family. It makes even a simple outfit look more put together. I'm already planning to wear it for Thanksgiving. Such a versatile piece!"

Beverly J., Bloomington, MN

Finally, a longer top that fits properly

The Chloe is true to size, with a relaxed fit and long sides that cover your hips and bottom, so you're not tugging at it all day. We carry it in forest green, from XS all the way to 3XL. My advice: check the size chart before you order. And if it isn't right, you have 30 days to send it back.

★★★★

"I'm 62 and wear a 2XL, so I'm always nervous about ordering tops online. I followed the size chart and was so happy with the roomy fit. It covers my hips and bottom nicely, and I don't feel like I have to keep pulling it down."

Charlene W., Pueblo, CO

Breakfast with my granddaughter. This is what retirement is for.

After nearly 45 years in America, Olivia and I have decided it's time to retire from the boutique and spend more time with our husbands, our children and our grandchildren here in Florida.

The Chloe is part of our final collection. When a size is gone, we won't be restocking it. So instead of carrying it into another season, we're saying goodbye to it with our Retirement Sale.

Nearly 45 YearsA lifetime in fashion

I don't usually write letters like this. But after a lifetime in fashion, I know when a piece is worth telling you about. If there's a family dinner on your calendar this fall, I hope you find your size before it's gone.

Thank you for giving two Italian sisters a home, a community and a lifetime of memories here in Florida.

With love, Rose 🤍
