A Letter From Rose

Who Says a Warm Jacket Can't Look Beautiful Too?

Brushed herringbone with real weight to it, engraved metal buttons and plush brown cuffs. The Evangeline keeps you warm on cold mornings and makes the simplest outfit look put together.

Me at my work table in our boutique here in Florida.

Imagine a crisp fall morning. You button up your jacket, step out for coffee with a friend, and before you've even sat down she says: "Where did you find that? You look so put together." And you are warm, comfortable and feeling like yourself.

Somewhere after sixty, most of the women I know gave up on jackets like that. The fitted ones pull across the bust or squeeze the arms, and the comfortable ones are puffy and shapeless. So we reach for the same old cardigan, every single morning, and feel a little invisible in it.

I don't think staying warm should mean giving up on looking lovely.

Two sisters, one little boutique

Olivia and I grew up near Lake Como, where our grandmother taught us to look at clothes the way you look at something you plan to keep for years: the fabric, the seams, the way it moves when you walk. We both became fashion designers in Italy, and nearly 45 years ago we followed our hearts to Florida and opened our boutique.

Since then, so many women have come through our door telling us the same thing: "Nothing is made for me anymore." Too young, too revealing, or so plain you feel invisible. Finding the pieces that are made for the women we actually know, women in their sixties and seventies with full lives, became our life's work.

Every piece has to pass two tests

Back at the work table. Some habits from Lake Como never leave you.
Back at the work table. Some habits from Lake Como never leave you.

I want to be honest with you: I didn't design the Evangeline. These days Olivia and I hand-pick the pieces for our boutique, and every one of them has to pass two tests.

Olivia's test is the fit, the fabric and the finish. Is it comfortable, is it made properly, will it still look good after a season of wear? My test is the woman wearing it. Does it flatter her, does it make her feel like herself, and where will she wear it? Most pieces fail one of the two and go straight back.

I'll admit I almost passed on this one. A stand collar and herringbone can so easily look stiff or a little too masculine. Then I buttoned it over my favorite white blouse and Olivia said: "Now that is you." Here's why it passed both tests.

Finally, a jacket that fits over my bust

Unboxing the Evangeline jacket at the kitchen table

The Evangeline is shaped through the waist, so it gives you a lovely line, but it isn't tight across the bust or tummy. The button front closes comfortably, and you can wear it open too, over a blouse or a fine knit.

★★★★★

"I'm 64 and wear an XL, so fitted jackets are always a gamble for me. I was pleasantly surprised by how nicely this one sits around my bust and tummy. I can button it comfortably without the fabric pulling, and it still gives me a lovely shape."

Warm enough for chilly mornings

The Evangeline jacket hanging by the front door on an autumn morning

This is not one of those thin jackets that only looks warm in the photos. The brushed herringbone is dense and has real weight to it, so it's the jacket you reach for on cool mornings when a cardigan just isn't enough, from October straight through to March.

★★★★★

"I was worried this might be one of those thin jackets that only looks warm in pictures. The fabric has a nice weight to it and feels substantial. I've found it lovely for cool fall mornings when I want something warmer than a cardigan."

Looks even more expensive in person

The engraved metal button and herringbone of the Evangeline jacket in its Olivia & Rose box

This is the part Olivia checked first. The engraved metal buttons, the buttoned flaps on the chest pockets, the deep plush brown cuffs and the fine rust topstitching on the back. Small details, but they are what make a jacket look like it came from a much more expensive boutique.

★★★★★

"I've been disappointed by jackets ordered online before, especially when the material feels cheap. The herringbone texture, buttons and contrasting trim give this one such a beautiful finish. It looks like something I'd expect to find in a much more expensive boutique."

Greta P., Portsmouth, OH

Feminine without feeling stiff

I was worried about the stand collar too. But there are no stiff lapels, and the soft brown trim around the cuffs and front warms up the olive. With a little necklace and a pretty blouse, it looks feminine and elegant, never boxy.

★★★★★

"At 67, I wasn't sure whether the high collar would look too masculine on me. But the shape is surprisingly flattering, especially with a little necklace and my favorite blouse. My daughter even asked where I found it!"

Nora V., Helena, AR

Easy to dress up or down

The Evangeline jacket with a white shirt, jeans and brown ankle boots

This is my part. With jeans and ankle boots it's perfect for errands and coffee with friends. Over a white blouse it's smart enough for church and lunch afterward. One jacket, and suddenly a simple outfit looks like you put real thought into it.

★★★★★

"I love clothes that work for more than one occasion. I've worn this with jeans for grocery shopping and over a white blouse for church and lunch afterward. It makes even a simple outfit look nicely put together without much effort."

Shelley K., Dover, NH

Comfortable through the arms and shoulders

So many fitted jackets fit at the waist and then pull the moment you reach for something. Olivia made me lift my arms, hug her and reach for a high shelf in it. The Evangeline moves with you through the shoulders, and the deep cuffs feel soft against your wrists. We carry it in olive, from XS all the way to 3XL. My advice: check the size chart before you order. And if it isn't right, you have 30 days to send it back.

★★★★

"I'm 61 and often find jackets that fit my waist but feel tight when I move my arms. I like the comfortable fit through the shoulders and the sleeve length on this one. The cuffs feel soft against my wrists, and I can move around without feeling restricted."

Annelise F., Walla Walla, WA

Breakfast with my granddaughter. This is what retirement is for.

After nearly 45 years in America, Olivia and I have decided it's time to retire from the boutique and spend more time with our husbands, our children and our grandchildren here in Florida.

The Evangeline is part of our final collection. When a size is gone, we won't be restocking it. So instead of carrying it into another season, we're saying goodbye to it with our Retirement Sale.

Nearly 45 YearsA lifetime in fashion

I don't usually write letters like this. But after a lifetime in fashion, I know when a piece is worth telling you about. If you're tired of hiding in the same old cardigan this fall, I hope you find your size before it's gone.

Thank you for giving two Italian sisters a home, a community and a lifetime of memories here in Florida.

With love, Rose 🤍
