A Letter From Rose

Who Says a Warm Winter Coat Has to Look Plain?

A mid-length hooded coat in burgundy with a subtle floral print and a plush, soft fleece lining. The Rosemary keeps you cozy on the coldest mornings, and still makes you feel nicely dressed.

Me at my work table in our boutique here in Florida.

Imagine a frosty winter morning. You zip up your coat, pull up the hood and step outside, and for once the cold doesn't bite. You're warm from your shoulders to your hips, and when you stop at the mailbox your neighbor says: "What a pretty coat. Where did you find it?"

Somewhere after sixty, most of the women I know started feeling the cold so much more. And what's left in the shops is either a plain, dark puffer that makes you feel older, or a short little jacket that leaves your hips and lower back in the wind.

I don't think staying warm should mean giving up on feeling pretty.

Two sisters, one little boutique

Olivia and I grew up near Lake Como, where our grandmother taught us to look at clothes the way you look at something you plan to keep for years: the fabric, the seams, the way it moves when you walk. We both became fashion designers in Italy, and nearly 45 years ago we followed our hearts to Florida and opened our boutique.

Since then, so many women have come through our door telling us the same thing: "Nothing is made for me anymore." Too young, too revealing, or so plain you feel invisible. Finding the pieces that are made for the women we actually know, women in their sixties and seventies with full lives, became our life's work.

Every piece has to pass two tests

Back at the work table. Some habits from Lake Como never leave you.
Back at the work table. Some habits from Lake Como never leave you.

I want to be honest with you: I didn't design the Rosemary. These days Olivia and I hand-pick the pieces for our boutique, and every one of them has to pass two tests.

Olivia's test is the fit, the fabric and the finish. Is it comfortable, is it made properly, will it still look good after a season of wear? My test is the woman wearing it. Does it flatter her, does it make her feel like herself, and where will she wear it? Most pieces fail one of the two and go straight back.

I'll admit I almost passed on this one. Warm winter coats so often look heavy and plain, and I wasn't sure a floral print would work on a coat. Then Olivia had me wear it on a chilly morning walk. Here's why it passed both tests.

Finally, a jacket that keeps me warm

A hand touching the soft fleece lining of the Rosemary coat

The Rosemary has a plush, soft fleece lining that keeps you comfortable on chilly fall and winter days. The moment you zip it up, it feels like wrapping yourself in a warm blanket.

★★★★★

"I'm 67 and seem to get cold so much easier these days. The soft fleece lining feels wonderfully cozy, especially on chilly mornings. I love being able to step outside without immediately feeling the cold. It feels like wrapping myself in a warm blanket!"

A winter jacket that actually looks feminine

Unboxing the Rosemary coat at the kitchen table

This is the part that won me over. A subtle floral print in a deep burgundy gives the Rosemary a softer, more elegant look than an ordinary winter coat. Even on a quick trip to the store, you feel nicely dressed.

★★★★★

"I'm 63 and was tired of wearing plain, dark winter coats that made me feel older. The subtle floral pattern on this one is such a lovely change. The burgundy color is beautiful, and I feel nicely dressed even when I'm just running errands."

Pearl D., Lancaster, PA

Love the extra coverage

The Rosemary coat hanging by the front door on a snowy morning

The Rosemary is a mid-length coat, so it doesn't stop at your waist. It covers your hips and lower back, which makes all the difference when you're out walking on a cold day.

★★★★★

"Most jackets I try stop right at my waist, leaving my hips and lower back cold. I really appreciate the longer length of this one. It covers me nicely when I'm out walking and feels so much more comfortable than those short little jackets."

Eleanor V., Ogden, UT

The hood makes such a difference

The attached hood adds protection when the weather turns cold or breezy. No hat to mess up your hair: you simply pull it up when the wind picks up, and push it back when you step inside.

★★★★★

"I don't like wearing winter hats because they mess up my hair, but I still need something when the wind picks up. The hood on this jacket is so convenient. I can just pull it up when I need extra coverage and feel much more protected."

Noreen F., Warwick, RI

Comfortable even over a thick sweater

The Rosemary coat with jeans, a cream sweater, gloves and ankle boots

The relaxed fit leaves room for a sweater underneath, so it never pulls across your shoulders or feels tight around your arms. With jeans, a cozy knit and ankle boots, it's an outfit for every winter errand.

★★★★★

"I'm 62 and can't stand jackets that pull across my shoulders or feel tight around my arms. This one has enough room for my favorite winter sweater underneath without feeling restricted. I can move comfortably, and it still looks lovely."

Marguerite H., Salina, KS

So easy to zip up and take off

No tiny buttons to struggle with. The full-length front zipper makes the Rosemary easy to put on and take off, even in a hurry on your way out the door. We carry it in burgundy, from XS all the way to 3XL.

★★★★

"At 70, I appreciate clothing that's simple to put on without struggling with tiny buttons. The full-length zipper makes this jacket so much easier to manage. I can put it on quickly before heading outside, and the cozy lining is a wonderful bonus."

Iris W., Traverse City, MI

Breakfast with my granddaughter. This is what retirement is for.

After nearly 45 years in America, Olivia and I have decided it's time to retire from the boutique and spend more time with our husbands, our children and our grandchildren here in Florida.

The Rosemary is part of our final collection. When a size is gone, we won't be restocking it. So instead of carrying it into another season, we're saying goodbye to it with our Retirement Sale.

Nearly 45 YearsA lifetime in fashion

I don't usually write letters like this. But after a lifetime in fashion, I know when a piece is worth telling you about. If you've been dreading another cold winter in a plain coat, I hope you find your size before it's gone.

Thank you for giving two Italian sisters a home, a community and a lifetime of memories here in Florida.

With love, Rose 🤍
